How to Build a $10K/Month App

Ten thousand dollars per month from an app. It is the milestone that means financial freedom for most indie developers. Here is a realistic, numbers-driven look at what it takes.

    The Math Behind 10K Monthly

There are many paths to 10K. Here are the most common:

Subscription model: 1,000 users at 9.99/month. Or 500 users at 19.99/month. Or 200 users at 49.99/month. B2B pricing makes the math much easier.

Freemium model: 100,000 free users, 3% conversion rate, 3.33/month average revenue per paying user. You need significant volume.

One-time purchase: 2,000 sales per month at 4.99. Requires constant marketing since there is no recurring revenue.

Ad supported: Roughly 2-5 million monthly active users to hit 10K in ad revenue alone. This is the hardest path.

    The Realistic Timeline

Month 1-2: Build and launch MVP. Revenue: 0-100 dollars.

Month 3-4: Iterate based on feedback. Find product-market fit signals. Revenue: 100-500 dollars.

Month 5-8: Growth phase. SEO, content marketing, App Store Optimization. Revenue: 500-2,000 dollars.

Month 9-14: Scaling what works. Paid acquisition if unit economics support it. Revenue: 2,000-5,000 dollars.

Month 15-24: Optimization. Reduce churn, increase ARPU, expand features. Revenue: 5,000-10,000 dollars.

Most successful indie apps reach 10K monthly between month 12 and 24. Anyone promising faster results is selling you something.

    What Separates Winners from Losers

Winners pick validated ideas. They do not guess, they use data to confirm demand before building.

Winners ship fast and iterate. Their first version is embarrassing. Version 10 is excellent.

Winners focus on retention. Acquiring a new user costs 5-10x more than retaining an existing one. Build features that make users come back daily.

Winners charge enough. A 2.99/month app needs 3,345 subscribers to hit 10K. A 14.99/month app needs 668. Charge what your value is worth.

Winners track metrics obsessively. DAU/MAU ratio, churn rate, ARPU, CAC, and LTV. If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.

    The Unsexy Truth

Building a 10K/month app is not glamorous. It is months of customer support, A/B testing onboarding flows, writing App Store descriptions, and fixing edge-case bugs. The exciting part (building the product) is 20% of the journey. The other 80% is marketing, retention, and optimization.

But 10K/month in recurring revenue, built once, maintained part-time, is genuine financial freedom. And it starts with the right idea.
