How the App Store Algorithm Works
App Store Optimization (ASO) is free marketing. Understanding how Apple and Google rank apps can mean the difference between 10 downloads and 10,000 downloads per month.
How Apple App Store Ranking Works
Apple's algorithm weighs several factors:
Keywords in title and subtitle: The most important factor. Your app name and subtitle should contain your primary keywords. "SnapBudget: AI Expense Tracker" ranks for "budget," "expense," and "tracker."
Download velocity: Recent download speed matters more than total downloads. A spike in downloads boosts your ranking temporarily.
Ratings and reviews: Both quantity and quality. Apps above 4.5 stars rank significantly higher. Ask for reviews after a positive interaction, not on first launch.
Retention: Apps that users keep and use regularly rank higher than those with high uninstall rates.
Update frequency: Regular updates signal an active, maintained app. Update at least monthly.
Google Play Ranking Differences
Google Play includes everything above plus:
Description keywords: Unlike Apple, Google indexes your full description. Include keywords naturally throughout.
Backlinks: External links to your Play Store listing can influence ranking.
Engagement metrics: Time in app, screens viewed, and feature usage all factor into Google's algorithm.
ASO Quick Wins
Title Optimization
Include your primary keyword in the app name. "BudgetBee: AI Expense Tracker and Bill Manager" targets multiple keywords while remaining readable.
Screenshots
Your first two screenshots are seen in search results. They must communicate your value proposition instantly. Show the app solving the core problem, not your logo or splash screen.
Keyword Research
Use App Store Connect's keyword field (100 characters on iOS). Research what competitors rank for. Target medium-competition keywords where you can realistically reach page one.
Ratings Strategy
Prompt for reviews after a user achieves something positive (completed a workout, saved money, reached a goal). Never prompt on first launch or after an error. Use the native rating dialog, not a custom one.
Localization
Translating your listing into 5-10 languages can double organic downloads with minimal effort. At minimum: English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Japanese.
The Long Game
ASO compounds over time. Each improvement in keywords, ratings, and retention builds on the previous. An app that ranks 50th today can reach top 10 in 3-6 months of consistent optimization.
